Short answer: replace your cordless vacuum filter every 2 to 3 months, or sooner with pets. Most lithium-ion vacuum batteries last a few years of regular use; replace the battery when runtime drops noticeably on a full charge.
Signs your filter needs replacing
- Suction feels weaker even with an empty bin
- The vacuum smells dusty when it runs
- Fine dust escapes from the exhaust
- The filter is still grey after washing and drying
A clogged filter is the most common reason a vacuum suddenly feels weak. A fresh filter usually brings suction back to where it was on day one.
How to wash a filter
- Tap loose dust out over a trash can.
- Rinse with cool water only. Skip soap.
- Let it dry completely, at least 24 hours, before putting it back. A damp filter can damage the motor.
Washing extends a filter's life, but it does not last forever. Keeping a spare means you can swap one in while the other dries.
Signs your battery needs replacing
- A full charge gives you much less runtime than it used to
- The vacuum cuts out at higher power settings
- The battery no longer reaches a full charge
A spare battery is also the easiest way to double your cleaning time for bigger homes.
